The short answer
Generative engine optimization services work to make your pages easy for AI search tools to find, read and cite. Real scope covers crawler access, page structure, sourced content and citation tracking. No provider controls what Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search or Perplexity show, so compare proposals on the work done and how results are logged.

Key takeaways
GEO work sits on top of normal SEO. Crawler access for Google, OpenAI and Perplexity is the first check. Nobody can promise a citation. A good proposal names the prompts it will track and shows you the log.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your content show up and get cited inside AI-written answers. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", which was accepted to KDD 2024 (arXiv 2311.09735). The paper describes AI answer engines as a black box that site owners have little control over.
You will also hear AEO, short for answer engine optimization. Most agencies use the two names for the same job. Ask any provider which one they mean, and what they will actually do.
What is included in a GEO service engagement?
A real GEO engagement covers five pieces of work, and each one maps to something the platforms publish. Here is the scope we think a buyer should expect to see written down.
- Crawler access. Check robots.txt, the CDN and the firewall for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Google AI features docs, OpenAI crawler docs and Perplexity crawler docs each say this access matters.
- Indexing basics. Google AI features docs say a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Answer-first pages. Each key page opens with a short, direct answer to the question a buyer asks, with the proof close by.
- Sourced claims. Every number and claim on the page links to where it came from, so a reader or a tool can check it.
- Citation tracking. A fixed set of buyer prompts, run on a set schedule, with the date, the tool and the cited sources logged each time.

Our SEO and AEO serviceHow is GEO different from traditional SEO work?
GEO is mostly SEO with a different scoreboard. Google AI features docs say the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them. The same page says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup.
What changes is what you measure. SEO tracks rankings and clicks. GEO also tracks whether your page is named or linked inside the answer. Google AI features docs say traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside the Web search type in the Search Console Performance report, so it is not split out for you.
ChatGPT and Perplexity add their own crawlers. OpenAI crawler docs say sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Perplexity crawler docs say PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results, and recommend allowing it in robots.txt.
What can a GEO provider honestly promise, and what can it not?
A GEO provider can promise the work, not the citations. Google AI features docs say that even a page that meets every requirement may still not be crawled, indexed or served. The GEO paper calls these engines a black box. So any promise of a ChatGPT mention is one nobody can keep.
- Can promise: a crawler access check with the fixes listed.
- Can promise: rewritten pages with sourced, answer-first sections.
- Can promise: a dated prompt log you can read yourself.
- Cannot promise: a citation in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews.
- Cannot promise: a set number of mentions by a set date.
How should you compare GEO service proposals?
Compare GEO proposals line by line on scope, proof and reporting. Put two proposals side by side and ask these questions of each.
- Does it name the prompts it will track, and which tools it will check?
- Does it say how often it checks, and will you see the raw log?
- Does it check robots.txt and firewall rules for each crawler by name?
- Does it list the pages it will change, and what changes?
- Does it promise citations or rankings? If yes, ask how.
- What do you keep if you leave: the pages, the prompt list and the log?

Questions to ask before hiring an AI agencyCan a GEO agency promise ChatGPT citations?
No. OpenAI crawler docs explain how to allow OAI-SearchBot so your site can appear, but nothing on that page promises a site will be shown. Treat a promised citation as a red flag.
